EXCERPT FROM THE JURY - PROTOCOL
The project impresses with a skilful approach to urban planning, which positions a monolithic structure on the property in such a way that a sequence of two clearly legible squares is created. This is achieved in particular through the sensitively composed kinks of the body, which create references to the historical buildings through walls oriented parallel to the facades in the surrounding area.
On the one hand, Mariahilfstraße will be widened into an urban square with good proportions, on the other hand, an open space formulated on three sides with orientation to the green space. At the interface between them, an urban portal situation is created with the north-east corner of the building as a counterpart to the edge of the historic building. The east facade cleverly takes the flight of Dr. Sigismund Epp way, exciting spatial changes between the public places and their visual relationships are to be expected. The western and northern facades, on the other hand, are oriented towards the neighboring buildings to the west and the Mariahilf Church. The playground in the direction of the river bank is clearly defined and good playability can be expected.
Viewed from afar, the south elevation blends calmly into the historical building image. From the opposite bank, the building covers the portico of the church, but leaves the dome completely unobstructed.
